Hypnotherapy
"Hypnosis is a natural but altered state of mind, in which the critical faculty is relaxed and selective thinking is established.....To understand therapeutic hypnosis is to comprehend the very nature of human miracles. While conventional medicine saves lives daily, by using hypnotherapy, even more can be done to relieve suffering, speed recovery from injury, regain health from disease, and prevent illness." Medical Hypnotherapy, Tim Simmerman 2007
The American Medical Association approved hypnosis for use in medicine and dentistry in 1958; however, it has only been in the last decade that hypnosis has steadily gained widespread acceptance and renewed respect within the medical community. Today, several prominent medical schools provide elective courses in hypnosis,” according to JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association. Consequently, Medical Hypnosis is becoming more and more accepted by clinicians, consumers, and even HMO’s (health maintenance organizations) for people with a variety of both acute and chronic diseases. Hypnosis has also been a powerful force transforming the world of psychotherapy for the past ten years.
The September 27, 2004 issue of Newsweek stated: "A growing body of research supports the ancient practice as an effective tool in the treatment of a variety of problems, from anxiety to chronic pain. Today, as practitioners work to assess and refine the clinical applications of hypnosis, they are also exploring its underlying mechanisms, using state-of-the-art imaging technology to document changes in the brain that occur when someone is in a hypnotic state. This increased understanding of how hypnosis works and what it does, makes it a legitimate option for patients [clients] as an adjunctive therapeutic tool.”
Another renown Mind-Body Wellness physician, Dr. Andrew Weil, states in his book, Self Healing Creating Natural Health for Your Body and Mind, “I have recommended hypnotherapy to help ease chronic pain, lessen the side effects of chemotherapy, alleviate symptoms of autoimmune disease, and counteract anxiety and sleep disorders. Hypnotherapy can also be used to improve performance skills, as a form of analgesia or sedation for medical and dental procedures--even to stop hemorrhaging in accident victims. In general, I believe that no condition is out of bounds for trying hypnotherapy on."
All the client has to do is bring a willingness to engage in the hypnotherapeutic process, and a strong desire to reach and successfully achieve their goals, whether medical in nature or for general mind-body wellness and healthy behaviors.
